Parent's Role in Scouting

Parent’s Role in Scouting

Support, Teach, Guide, Help

Cub Scouting is about achievement and personal growth. To advance in Rank, some reading and work has to be done at home, even if work on the badges is done at the Den meetings. Most projects for the 1st and 2nd Graders are designed to require parental assistance and support.

Work on achievements toward rank is not meant to be “homework.” Cub Scouts is to be a learning experience while at the same time having FUN!

All parents are expected to help out on Committees at times. We try to simplify these tasks, but parents are needed to help coordinate activities, to help make sure all activities are safe, and above all else, fun.

While not required, it is strongly encouraged that Adult Tiger partners also wear the orange Tiger shirt. All Den Leaders and Committee chairs should also wear their uniforms at all Pack functions.

Costs Involved in Cub Scouting

MEMBERSHIP DUES

Each Pack sets its own membership dues so there is enough money to cover the expected costs of providing a quality program. We have a fairly active Pack and require a lot of money to pay for all our activities, patches, training, and crafts. Because of that, we ask that each family contribute toward the maintenance of our Pack so we can keep being active and giving our Scouts a fun and educational experience.

Our basic annual membership per Cub Scout is $15.00.

WHERE ALL THE MONEY GOES

  • $10.00 Council—to cover general administration and organizational costs of district-wide activities like Scout-O-Rama, and other District activities. Also helps fund the council campgrounds and provide training of other District level volunteers.
  • $1.00 Insurance
  • $4.00 Pack activities—awards/badges and other activities & achievements, craft supplies, and parent training materials. This also goes toward paying the $10/leader and $20 pack recharter fees.
  • $12.50 Boys Life Magazine—Paid separately, 12 monthly issues full of exciting stories and adventures.

Small weekly dues may be asked to cover additional costs such as materials for projects and snacks. If charged, these Den dues are generally $1-2 per meeting.

In addition to the $5.00 that goes into the Pack for registration, there are other funds that must be raised to support the Pack and the Scouts to pay for activities, registration, insurance, awards, training, and more. The average cost to the Pack per Scout is $130 per year. The Pack raises most of that money through fundraisers (Popcorn Sale, Bottle & Can Drives) and some through donations from our Chartering Organization (the Avon Rotary Club), and from local businesses. Obviously we do not want to incur those costs directly onto the Scouts and their families, so your continued participation in our fundraisers is essential to keeping the cost of scouting to individual families to a reasonable level.

The Council estimates that it's cost per boy is around $175. Most of their money also comes from fundraisers and donations. Once a year they come to our Pack to ask the parents to donate money to council. The popcorn sale also helps raise money for the Council as well as for our unit and the individual scout (Cub Accouts).
