Direct Sales & Taking Orders
So you've never sold delicious Cub Scout popcorn door-to-door with the popcorn in your hand (direct sale)?
Sounds a little scary perhaps?
"What if I can't sell a whole case?"
"How do I carry around ALL that popcorn?"
"Do I have to collect money at the same time?"
"What if I don't have the kind the customer wants?"
"Where can I store the popcorn to keep it away from my pet monkey?"
"Where do I get the popcorn?"
"How do I record direct sales on my popcorn order form?"
These are all great questions. Let's see if we can help you out so you can be a superstar seller!
"What if I can't sell a whole case?"
First, don't start with too much. Try one or two cases. The 8oz. caramel corn ($10ea/6 per case), Unbelievable butter ($14ea/6 per case) and Butter Light ($14ea/ 6 per case) are good sellers. If you have a box or two left over, you can always apply it to your "show and sell" orders (let Mrs. Bellimer know that you have “inventory”), or perhaps someone in your Den would help you out. In case you're wondering, the Pack cannot be responsible for storage once popcorn leaves Mrs. Bellimer’s house. That's why we can't take popcorn back. Not to worry - no one in our Pack has ever been stuck with popcorn.
"How do I carry around ALL that popcorn?"
Well, you don't have to carry all of it. Take half a case of each kind of popcorn you have. Put it in your wagon. Take a one inch by one inch piece of paper and write on it "Buy me today". Tape or glue this paper right on your order form near the appropriate pictures. Using our safe popcorn selling guidelines, go door-to-door with your order form.
Point out to customers the types of popcorn they can start enjoying today! PS - if you don't have a wagon, maybe you can borrow one. Sell with a Scout friend who does have a wagon – what fun!
"Do I have to collect money at the same time?"
Yes, you have to collect money at the time of sale for all direct sales. Checks can be made out to "Avon Cub Scouts." Bring an envelope to carry money in. Be sure to mark the "paid and delivered" columns on your order sheet. Turn in all money from direct sales to Mrs. Bellimer by November 28th at the very latest.
"What if I don't have the kind the customer wants?"
Easy - just take an order just like you would for any "show and sell" sale. Popcorn can be delivered starting November 15th. Remember to tell your customers "thank you for supporting Cub Scouting!"
"Where can I store the popcorn to keep it away from my pet monkey?"
Wow - you have a pet monkey? Awesome! Well, it is important to store your popcorn safely and all pets and incoming critters (we have occasional field mice and racoons) need to stay away. It is best to store your popcorn where it won't be tempting to animals or hungry teenagers. Also, store popcorn in a cool, dry area away from high heat or humidity.
"Where do I get the popcorn?"
Contact Nancy Bellimer at 233-2662 (9am-10pm) and she will be glad to help you with your direct sales. She lives conveniently at 242 Rochester St. All varieties of popcorn are available for direct sale except those that have chocolate in them.
"How do I record direct sales on my popcorn order form?"
Fill in the customer's name (last name is OK) and their address. Where it asks for phone number, write "direct sale". Make sure you mark the type of popcorn you sold in the right column and mark the "delivered" and "paid" columns too. Remember too - when your sheet is full it is eligible to be in a weekly Council drawing for cool prizes. One Scout from our Pack won an electric razor scooter last year! You can mail or fax a COPY of your completed sheet to Iroquois Trail Council at: 45 Liberty St., Suite 2, Batavia, NY 14020; Phone: 343-0307; Fax: 815-0312 Please fill out your name and address, phone number and Pack 26 on your order form before copying and sending.
Good luck selling!

Selling & Safty Tips
* ALWAYS sell with another Scout or with an adult.
* NEVER enter anyone's home.
* NEVER sell after dark unless you're with an adult.
* DON'T carry large amounts of cash money.
* ALWAYS walk on the sidewalk and driveway.
* ALWAYS wear your uniform.
* ALWAYS smile and introduce yourself.
* ALWAYS tell your customers why you are selling popcorn.
* KNOW the different kinds of popcorn you're selling.
* ALWAYS say "Thank You!"
* ALWAYS make a copy of your order form for next year.
Popcorn profits are split 50/50 between the Pack and Scouts. The Pack share of the profits is largely used to purchase all the wonderful awards, recognitions and rank advancements earned by our Scouts throughout the year. The Scouts portion is put into their cub account and can be used for day camp, scout dues, purchase uniforms and other stuff.
